Dermal fillers are tiny injections of gel that lift, plump and rejuvenate the skin. They can be used minimise the appearance of lines and wrinkles and to restore lost volume wherever needed (eg. the cheeks).
At the Banwell Clinic we use a number of clinically-proven, high quality brands of filler including Juvederm, Voluma, Perfectha, Ellanse and Bolotero. The exact materials vary in manufacture and composition, but most comprise hyaluronic acid (HA). This is a compound found naturally in your skin which helps to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin to create a more youthful appearance.

Dermal fillers can be used in various different places, including in the cheeks, forehead, around the eyes, lips and nose. They can also be used to fill indentations in the skin and in other areas of the body including the hands and décolleté. The volume of filler used will depend on the area being filled (whether fine lines or deeper creases).

A topical anaesthetic cream (e.g. EMLA or AMETOP) may first be applied although many fillers also contain local anaesthetic within them. The gel is then carefully injected into the skin using a very fine needle. The areas being treated will be gently massaged to ensure the filler lifts and plumps the skin as desired.
The procedure typically lasts around 30-60 minutes, depending on the number of areas to be treated and the volume of filler needed.
Modern fillers have a local anaesthetic within the gel which reduces any discomfort. The needle used is very fine and most people find the treatment only mildly uncomfortable.
Following the procedure there may be some mild redness or tenderness in the treated area/s. This usually subsides after a couple of hours and you should be fine to resume your everyday activities within four hours.
The treatment will start to take effect immediately, but the optimum results are usually seen after about 1-2 weeks. We always give you a mirror to see the results and thus you as the patient can control the volume used. We prefer a natural, healthy look but try to accommodate your wishes as much as possible. The primary component of Ellanse is microspheres of Poly-caprolactone (PCL). This is slightly different from hyaluronic acid. It is an FDA approved bioresorbable material used in surgical sutures. Once injected it has a potent volumising effect by helping to absorb water in the initial phase followed by a second phase involving stimulation of new collagen.
